Patsy gains recognition in the Derwent Art Prize

Artspace member Patsy Whiting has recently had a lot to celebrate. She was recently awarded not one but two prizes in the national Derwent Art Prize. Patsy won both the Third Prize and the UK Coloured Pencil Society Award for Excellence with her coloured pencil drawing with the curious title of ‘Garden garage marriage’.

John Ruskin exhibition

John Ruskin Ruskin

I visited this temporary exhibition whilst staying in Edinburgh for the Fringe.  I have been aware of Ruskin as an artist for a long time (not to mention his work as an art critic), but had never experienced a concentration of his paintings like this.  He is a superb craftsman, handling watercolour with extreme skill.  He is also very good at contrasting degrees of finish, with some parts of architectural imagery being highly finished and then towards the edges often ‘thin out’ into sketchy lines and washes.  This was a very worthwhile exhibition to see.

Loughborough Art Trail

The Loughborough art trail ‘Art This Way’ will be held over the weekend of 5th and 6th of July (from 11am to 6pm). 6 houses and gardens will be displaying the work of 20 artists and craftspeople in the Forest Road area of Loughborough.

It is a wonderful opportunity for people to see a variety of artwork and meet the artists, away from the traditional art gallery.  From well-known, established artists Helen Rhodes and Barry D Bulsara, and many others, there is something to suit all tastes and pockets. Three Artspace members will also be taking part- Nita Rao, Jo Sheppard and Anna Michalska.

There will also be three venues selling drinks and delicious homemade cakes – the proceeds of which will be going towards the Charnwood Scouts Japan World Scout Jamboree. Each scout needs to raise £3500 in order to take part on the trip.

Venues are 204 , 232 and 247 Forest Road, 8 and 33 Highfields Drive and 16 Shepherds Close and will be clearly signposted on the day. They are all within walking distance of each other.

This will be the third year of running the Art This Way art trail in Loughborough, last year saw around 300 people visit over the weekend and we raised over £300 for the Teenage Cancer Unit at Leicester Royal Infirmary.

Hope you can make it.

Clearview Open Studio Review

Spring Open Studio

Over the weekend of June 7th and 8th June, two Artspace members opened up their studio in the village of Quorn, Leicestershire. It proved to be a very successful event with over 200 visitors perusing the work of painter Jo Sheppard and sculptor/ceramist Nita Rao. Also exhibiting was guest silversmith Susheel Rao who had a collection of contemporary jewellery. If you would like to be notified of their next event, please join our mailing list.
