My highly personal paintings are like a visual diary. Recent work explores the nature of foods and domestic interiors. I use pure pigments (making my own oil paint) as these maximize high chroma colour contrasts and enable a wide range of distinctiveness within earth colours to be retained. My work is multi-layered - the depiction of food is sometimes symbolic, alluding to notions of spiritual sustenance, well-being or death (hanging game). The formal arrangement of each painting is important - balance and dynamism through the carefully considered placing of objects and juxtapositions of colours. |

I explore several 'avenues' of Identity, including a 'Tree of Life' painting. This takes its inspiration from a medieval tradition, but I exchange traditional iconography for personal autobiographical imagery. In another painting in a modernist style I depict my magician son Anthony Middleton with mask and playing cards, with the implications of changing personality and chance. |
