Rose by the Cooling Towers 2008

coloured pencil 102cm x 66cm

Rose was made in two sections, the mount around the picture acting like a window on the scene. This is a colour development of the earlier drawing with the same title. It was recently shown at the Mall Galleries in London at the 147th Annual Exhibition of the Society of Women Artists.

Rose by the Cooling Towers 2008

Rose is based on one of Picasso’s women painted during his period at Dinard. The monumental female has been reinterpreted in an industrial landscape.

Henrietta in a Landscape 2008

coloured pencil 67cm x 98cm

Henrietta reclines on the grass with the cooling towers of Radcliffe upon Soar power station looming in the background. These towers, visible from our house, seemed to echo the masses and volumes of the female form.

Head from Demoiselles after Picasso 2007

relief print 45cm x 58cm

Demoiselles after Picasso is a relief print in nine sections based on three of the figures in Picasso’s legendary work “Demoiselles D’Avignon”. This photograph shows a detail from one of the artist’s proofs of a single section from the nine piece work.

Dreamer 2003

coloured pencil 50cm x 70cm

Dreamer is the third version of this idea, a woman dreaming about holidays in sunny climes. It took a long time to emerge.

Sculpture Garden 2000

coloured pencil 24cm x 12cm

I started working in coloured pencil more regularly after completing some graphics for a musician. There seemed to be a great deal to explore with this medium creating the rounded forms of a female nude in a landscape.

Inclined Woman 1997

maquette in paper and metallic paint 40cm

I have made several experimental maquettes using layers of handmade paper glued together, cut to shape and moulded by hand. They are painted with a mixture of acrylic and metallic finishes.

Girl Watching 1982

relief print 46cm x 53cm

I am attached to the notion that some pieces of work based on the human form do look back at me when I finish them. This is a relief print made by incising an image into wet glue on a board, then allowing it to dry, inking it up and wiping off areas to produce variation in tone before printing. In this process there is always an element of surprise involved which I find addictive.

Dancer 1981

crayon on relief print 43cm x 50cm

This dancer belongs to a large series of work resulting from my experience of joining a ballet class for the first time, aged 31, and experiments in printmaking using primitive equipment.
