Introduction to the artist

My paintings are an attempt to depict space in both the internal and external worlds.

The external work is usually an attempt to show an infinite quality of the universe. I invite the viewer to plunge with me into that endless void and marvel at how it is in fact home to the very essence of all matter. Nature in its rawest form represented by nebulae, galaxies, stars and planets prompts the thought that maybe we are all made from the same dust …it is just a question of scale. My exploration of the internal finds this space just as daunting and infinite as the external. Once again, there is substance in that void and I examine the relationship of nebulous thoughts and emotions to our supposedly complete and concrete self.

My technique involves building up many layers of lacquer and acrylic which are then scraped flat and polished to a glass-like finish. Hopefully this invites the viewer into the space I have created and helps them experience a feeling of its depth.
