Introduction to artist:
Nita studied at Plymouth College of Art, and at Loughborough University, where she took a BA (Hons), in Fine Art and Sculpture.

Nita uses the ancient technique of lost-wax casting for her bronze sculptures. A three-dimensional shape is made in wax, which is then invested in casting sand to form a mould. When the mould is heated, the wax drains away, or is lost. Molten bronze then fills the space. When cool, the mould is broken away, and the cast cleaned up and patinated. A granite block is chosen to complement the bronze.

A Moment's Reflection

Memories come into focus at moments of reflection before dissolving back into the unconscious.

Our identity is made up in part by the life we build around ourselves, our daily lives, the things we do. When that is taken away there is a feeling of alienation, of loss of identity. This has happened several times in my life, when travelling to another culture, at first feeling lost, but having to build up a new life, a new identity, eventually becoming closer to the old identity, but never the same. This also happened when my twin boys were born, adjusting to a whole new way of life. Now 2 ½ years on, I am adjusting to my new identity. This was the starting point for my work for identity. I have made seven spheres which are made up of photographic 'fragments' of my memories of these times of change, my family before I was born, my childhood and my life before parenthood that are always part of my whole.

'On the threshold' exhibition.

June/July 2000
'The Loughborough University Generator Gallery'
Packe Street, Loughborough.
Leicestershire. England

The images of the crescent moon cradling the sun are often painted on front doors in Tibet. For Tibetans this symbolises the oneness of life, the cessation of duality, thus reminding those entering that even the sun and the moon which seem so far apart are inextricably linked. I have used this imagery with similar yet different symbolism in my own work. This year I did not want to be involved in the struggle between opposites, rather for there to be an understanding that the opposites exists, and that the tension between them should create balance and calm rather than anguish.
