I have been a working artist since I graduated in 1997. Working from my studio at home I have been continually developing and successfully selling my wire designs at prestigious galleries and many contemporary craft shows.
My hand-constructed wire designs include 'woven' boxes/baskets and large beaded hangings and chandeliers. Made from telephone wire, beads and found fragments using a self-invented method of weaving, they are highly individual and have both a sculptural and novel quality. Innovative and exciting, each piece is totally unique.
Workshops
I also tutor workshops for wire weaving in schools, for adults and community groups where I
show a selection of work and then do hands-on demonstrations so that students can learn the
basic techniques and develop their own creative wire designs
Paintings
My paintings are influenced by colour, texture and mood.
I work on the surfaces using acrylic and oil pastel creating vibrant or subtle abstract
studies and then scratch into the surfaces. My main source of inspiration for some of
this work has been Venetian canals and architecture.
In March 2003 I had Solo Exhibition at Charnwood Museum, Loughborough entitled
'Travelling Sketchbook'
I am an active member of Loughborough group of artists 'Artspace' and exhibit regularly with
them. In the 'Reveal' exhibition I showed pieces entitled
'Revealing the Beach' where I tried to reflect the beauty, peace and serenity in the natural
beauty of beach landscapes.
In June 2003 I exhibited a piece called 'Lifebox' - this was a shallow wooden tray with lots
of small compartments which was filled with bits and pieces that I had been saving.
"My 'lifebox' is a celebration of life this far - an assortment of familiar objects collected
over the years and assembled together as a reminder of things past
Treasured photographs of my family; my auntie's lipstick; my daughter's Christmas list;
faded bits of paper etc. evoke memories of a day, a place, a time or an event in my life.
Some of the sections have personal significance and some are just favourite colours or
lucky numbers"
I am the Secretary of textile artist group 'Dodeka' and exhibit regularly with them.
I am currently working on the theme of isolation/poverty and hope to produce some interesting
textile pieces which will be part of an exhibition about the old Workhouse at Southwell in
Nottinghamshire. This touring exhibition will begins there in July 2004, and will then be
shown at the Bullyard Gallery, Southwell and Harding House, Lincoln later on in the year.
I also work part time as a personal assistant for a local arts consultant.

‘Lifebox’
Mixed media relief sculpture
Mixed media
My work is just for fun really. The lifebox is a small shallow wooden tray with small equal
sections like pigeonholes that I have painted, decorated and adorned with lots of little
favourite treasures. These have been collected over the years - just bits and pieces that
I have lying around the house that remind me of a certain time or event in my life.
Familiar objects, faded photographs of my family, small reminders of things past etc.
Some of the sections have personal significance and some are just favourite colours or lucky
numbers.

Sue Clews
in the Museum.
Art work shown at the
Charnwood Museum
Loughborough.
My work is a response to images collected from a variety of sources including Venice,
Prague and the Greek Islands.
I have a fascination for doorways and windows and in particular, the texture and colour.
Faded, flaky facades, peeling paintwork and sea-washed wood continue to be my design influence.
I have also tried to work on revealing the beauty of reflections on water and the emotion
generated by the vibrant colour in beach landscapes.
'REVEAL' exhibition
August 2002 - Art work shown at the
Charnwood Museum
Loughborough Leicestershire, England.
After graduating from Loughborough College of Art & Design Sue Clews became a
designer/maker promoting her hand-constructed textiles made from telephone wire,
beads and found fragments.
The work shown here represents a new venture for Sue.
Strongly influenced by colour, and working with sketches and photographs collected
while travelling, she has experimented with varying media and technique to create
these pieces which are 'artistic journeys' - studies inspired by mood, shade and texture.
Revealing the beach
My work is a response to many beaches I have visited.
