‘Rhythm & Movement’

ArtSpace Loughborough’s Exhibition At Déda Derby

17th May – 31st August 2023. Open Mon-Sat 9 am- 4.30 pm.

ArtSpace Loughborough, which created the phenomenally successful Outwoods Sculpture Trail in summer 2023, has an exciting new venture in Derby. The group of artists from the Charnwood area of Leicestershire has collaborated with Déda, Derby’s dance and performance centre. Members were given the opportunity to sketch and photograph in a selection of dance classes and performances and then use their responses to create work. The result is ‘Rhythm & Movement’, an exciting exhibition of new art. This will run from 17th May to 31st August 2023 throughout the Déda building in Chapel Street, Derby.

Beryl Miles  ‘Flight’ (oil & cold wax on board)

Ballet and contemporary dance feature as inspiration in the work of Beryl Miles, Ingrid Kleins-Daniels, Mary Byrne, Kate Hooper, Pam Everard and Frances Ryan among others. Sue Barry sketched student rehearsals for a drama performance.

Other sources for ‘Rhythm & Movement’, not so directly related to Déda’s activities, vary from Judith Eason’s paintings of birdsong patterns and Sally Reayer’s paintings of birds in flight to Gill Hugman-Perkins’s work based on patterns in reflections.

Sue Barry   ‘Drum Beat Joy’ (mixed media on textile)

Ingrid Kleins-Daniels also organised a collaboration between BA/MA dance students at Déda and MA Fine Art students from Derby University and some of the art students’ work features in the exhibition too. Mary Byrne, who is a prize-winning author as well as an artist, will lead a creative writing workshop, inspired by work in the exhibition, on 18th May 2-4 pm at Déda.

Kate Hooper   ‘Let’s Dance’ (linocut)

‘Rhythm & Movement’, Déda, 19 Chapel Street, Derby DE1 3GU (opposite Chapel Street car park).

Layered Meanings – in Relation to the Written Word

An Exhibition by ArtSpace.

Members of ArtSpace Loughborough, Charnwood’s group of professional artists, who have just finished their fantastically successful sculpture trail in the Loughborough Outwoods, are exhibiting paintings and drawings at West Bridgford Library Gallery, West Bridgford Road, Nottingham, from 4th to 22nd October. The exhibition is titled ‘Layered Meanings – in Relation to the Written Word’: the gallery is in a library so the artists have linked their work to books or words.

Ingrid Kleins-Daniels: ‘Time Passes’ (pastel)

Most of the artists have been inspired by texts – from writers as diverse as Dante, Sigmund Freud and Virginia Woolf. Some artists have related their work to wider aspects of the written word such as the conveying of meaning or the patterns of rhythm in language.

Kate Hooper: ‘Interpretation of Dreams’ (acrylic)

Ingrid Kleins-Daniels has an atmospheric pastel drawing ‘Time Passes’ inspired by part of Virginia Woolf’s novel To the Lighthouse. Kate Hooper’s ‘Interpretation of Dreams’ is an enigmatic acrylic painting about the artist’s own dreams and imaginings. Mary Byrne is fascinated by the character of Estella in Charles Dickens’s Great Expectations. Erica Middleton was encouraged by some words of Dante about making proper use of every day: she painted five exquisite little oils of dawn over the River Soar as seen from her house on five different days. Sue Barry liked the poem ‘Leisure’ by William Henry Davies: it made her stop and look afresh at details in the natural world. Greta Thunberg’s rousing words about saving the planet encouraged Sally Reayer to paint her as Joan of Arc!

Pam Everard: ‘Writer’s Block’ (acrylic)

Anna Michalska Tomajer translates rhythms and patterns in poetry visually. Judith Eason was moved by the symbolism on medieval tiles. Jemma Rix has a haiku as well as an art work. Frances Ryan’s narrative paintings are about women searching. Alison Folland has actually used cut-out parts of old books in her collages. Pam Everard’s abstract acrylic painting is about writer’s block!

An exhibition for everyone to enjoy, not just art lovers.

Sally Reayer: ‘Eco Warrior’ (oil)

REMEMBERING CHRIS ENGLISH

One of the most valued members of ArtSpace Loughborough, Chris English, sadly passed away in April 2021.

The courage and determination that Chris showed in life, particularly in the face of his continuing health problems, was an inspiration to us all. His passion for painting and poetry was a gift to us all.

We are pleased to post a small tribute to Chris here on our website where Chris will be our featured artist for the next few months.

Layered Meanings

This interactive online exhibition has now closed.

Please watch our virtual tour archive video below.

An interactive online exhibition by members of ArtSpace.

Online December 1st – February 18th.

The theme “Layered Meanings” has been interpreted in various interesting and thought provoking ways by the 17 artists taking part.  Some have chosen to look at the theme in terms of layering of the painted surface, others have used words and phrases as a starting point to develop different interpretations through visual form.  Painting the changing view from windows and using a historical figure re-imagined as a present day eco-warrior are other themes explored by individuals; another has used imagery from childhood. Some have used the natural world as their visual stimulus for developing imagery based on the earth and nature. The exhibits range from paintings and mixed media to photography, collage, 3D work and prints. There are also ideas and creative responses based on the recent lockdown situation to express thoughts and feelings about the world at large; the pandemic and how it affects us all.
